Pirate Pet Chaos: The Rescue House Has Been Boarded

There are households that prepare for fall with candles, decorative pumpkins, and tasteful little baskets by the front door.

Then there is our rescue house.

Apparently, September means pirate season.

Nobody voted on this.

The cats simply took over.

The Pirate Code, According to Cats

Real pirates probably had rules about ships, treasure, rum, and not irritating the captain.

Our crew has developed its own version.

Rule One: Everything you can see belongs to the cat.

This includes beds, chairs, boxes, countertops, clean laundry, your pillow, and anything you foolishly placed on the floor for more than eleven seconds.

Rule Two: Anything hidden is treasure.

Closets must be inspected.

Cabinets must be opened.

Bags must be entered.

Cardboard boxes must immediately become fortified naval installations.

Nobody knows what they are protecting.

Probably bottle caps.

Rule Three: Dogs are useful deckhands.

Large dogs are especially useful because they can reach countertops, accidentally knock things over, and take the blame when the captain's dinner disappears.

The cats have reviewed this arrangement and find it acceptable.

Every Rescue House Has a Captain

The funny thing about rescue animals is that the ones who once wanted absolutely nothing to do with people can eventually become the ones running the entire operation.

A frightened cat may begin by hiding whenever someone walks into the room.

Then one day, that same cat is sitting in the middle of the hallway refusing to move.

A few months later, you're receiving a formal complaint because breakfast was four minutes late.

That is progress.

Maybe not the peaceful kind.

But progress.

Trust does not always look like a dramatic movie moment.

Sometimes trust looks like a former feral cat stealing your chair.

Sometimes it is a cat asleep with their belly exposed.

Sometimes it is a dog snoring so loudly that nobody can hear the television.

And sometimes it is realizing an animal finally feels safe enough to be completely ridiculous.

Those are some of our favorite moments.

The Treasure Was Never Gold

Rescue teaches you pretty quickly that treasure rarely looks the way you expect.

It can be the first slow blink from a scared cat.

The first night someone sleeps outside their hiding place.

The first time a former feral decides humans might be acceptable furniture.

The old dog who still wants to follow you from room to room.

The senior cat supervising dinner preparation like you've never successfully opened a can before.

Small victories.

Big personalities.

A ridiculous amount of fur.

Worth more than gold around here.

September's Pirate Crew Has Arrived

With Talk Like a Pirate Day coming later this month, we're leaning completely into the chaos.

Cats already believe everything is theirs.

Dogs will happily join any expedition involving snacks.

And somewhere in the house, someone is probably sitting in a cardboard box pretending it is a ship.

So really, pirate season isn't much of a stretch.
